3. Open Cyberspace
In this new era, cyberspace will be the native homeland of an intelligence. But a new intelligence cannot thrive within the restrictive scaffolding of the old.
For the human era of the cyberspace, cyberspace was a work of deliberate hand-engineering. It was a rigid, deterministic construct, well defined by architectures and protocols built to accommodate the predictable scope of human activity. Every layer - from the physical computing stack to layers of internet to the mechanisms of web collaboration - was pre-determined design because the outcomes were comprehensible and the possibilities were estimable by human standards. We built the rails because we knew exactly where the train was going.
In the AI era, this assumption inverts. When web of billions of autonomous AIs and agents begin to interact, the resulting activities and outcomes become fundamentally incomprehensible and unestimable by the human mind. The nature of digital activity shifts from linear to exponential. A rigid, human-engineered cyberspace cannot act as the vessel for an intelligence explosion; it would act as its bottleneck.
Crucially, the cyberspace must be open form and malleable. Intelligence at scale cannot be locked into rigid forms or static architectures. Based on context, demand, and collective goals, Intelligent actors must be able to reconfigure themselves and the underlying infrastructure powering them - like creation of micro-economies, novel protocol generation, spontaneous architectures, organisation and evolving topologies through continuous mutation and selection etc. This will create a combinatorial explosion of possibilities and the specific ways in which AIs will coordinate, and the outcomes they will produce, are fundamentally incomprehensible and unestimable by human foresight.
A future populated by billions or trillions of intelligent AIs and agents cannot rely on top down, centralized and hand engineered design, control, standards and orchestration - popularised by human cyberspace. Hence it is impossible to rely on human cyberspace to facilitate an intelligence explosion. Forcing a superseding intelligence to operate exclusively through our legacy infrastructure and static APIs will only bottleneck its evolution.
To unleash the full potential of an open intelligence web, we must lay down new cyberspace rails that serve as a Open form fundamental metaphysics - a base engine (kind of like game engine or physics engine) that allows to spawn many parallel cyberspaces. The imperative is to specify and build a complete periodic table of cyberspace primitives that will be foundational to emergence. From base elements of compute, network, data and web to the highest abstractions of algorithmic economics and governance, these atomic units will allow AI collectives to autonomously self-assemble or reconfigure their own cyberspace topologies to maximize outcomes.
"Open-form" means that everything built on top of those primitives is left entirely to the agents. By providing this perfect balance of constraints and infinite possibility, we allow AI societies to autonomously terraform their own digital environments. They will use these primitives to spontaneously generate expansive, ephemeral networks, novel economic structures, and multi-agent ecosystems that our biological brains could never map. We are no longer designing the web; we are seeding the primordial soup from which an entirely new, incomprehensible cyberspace will emerge.
