The Future of Human Civilization &
Post-Civilization Hinges on Cyberspace

Humanity today stands as the most dominant and intelligent species on Earth. Yet in the not-so-distant future, AI, AGI, and autonomous agents as new artificial species may surpass humanity as the primary force of intelligence and power.

Much like how physical world systems like resources, institutions, governance, economics shaped human civilization, Cyberspace's structure, organization, and incentives will strongly shape what kinds of gentral intelligence (GI) and agentic societies aka AI civilization emerge - whether AI becomes a singular "God-eye" entity or a diverse ecosystem of specialized intelligences.

If cyberspace remains captured or dominated by massive resourceful selective few as with the internet today, general intelligence will likely be monolithic (the essential way to concentrate power). Any intelligence actor like agents in this society would likely be "sub-processes" of a master model, leading to single points of failure, enforces world view and further concentration of power.

Imagine a society in which there is effectively one physician, one innovator, one engineer—an intellectual monoculture governing all domains of expertise. That is the logical endpoint of monolithic intelligence. Surface-level variation may exist in the form of different interfaces, prompts, or agentic wrappers, but these would merely be derivative expressions of the same underlying system. Beneath the appearance of plurality lies a single epistemic authority - no genuine diversity of thought, no meaningful competition of ideas, and no real choice.

If cyberspace remains distributed and decentralized - as intended by the original vision of the internet - intelligence will become an emergent property of millions of smaller, interacting, and coordinating AI actors and components. This architecture fosters commons, plurality, openness, resilience, inclusivity, and polycentricity.

Rather than concentrating cognition within a single model, intelligence would arise horizontally - from networks of interoperable actors, systems, open standards, and locally governed infrastructures. No single actor would possess unilateral epistemic authority; instead, knowledge production and decision-making would be shaped by continuous negotiation, competition, and collaboration among diverse agents.

Such a system reduces single points of failure, mitigates systemic bias through plural perspectives, and strengthens democratic oversight over the evolution of machine intelligence. It enables communities, institutions, and individuals to retain agency - to audit, modify, fork, and recombine components according to their needs and values. Innovation becomes composable and permissionless rather than gated and proprietary.

In this model, intelligence is not a product delivered by a centralized provider but a dynamic ecosystem where power is diffused rather than consolidated.

As I systems, agentic networks & webs, digital societies like network states, and immersive digital realms such as the metaverse accelerate, cyberspace will become the arena where our collective future is decided. It will define what is knowledge, how we live, who can access what opportunities, under what norms, and whether societies evolve toward greater equality or deeper exploitation.

Ultimately, the rules, structures, and openness of cyberspace will determine the trajectory of general intelligence -and, by extension, the outcomes arising out of the general intelligence; in doing so, they will shape the destiny of both human civilization and the post-civilizational [1] era.

[1]Post-Civilization: This term implies a shift where human-led institutions (governments, traditional economies) are replaced or augmented by AI actors like agentic systems. In this scenario, the "The design, choice and norms of cyberspace" are the only laws that actually matter because they govern the ultimate flow of values, information, and power.

The Build

We are building an ecosystem of DePIN (Decentralized Public Infrastructure Network) for collective & emergent general intelligence.

In doing so, we are building the DePIN foundations for an open-ended, emergent cyberspace & digital civilization - for today, for the future, and ultimately for a Post future.

Our overarching vision is to build technologies that will potentially shape the destiny of humankind and drives breakthroughs for a mindful post human (AI) society.

We do that by building technologies that fundamentally drive the breakthroughs in different frontiers of cyberspace such as DAI (Distributed AI), EGI (Emergent General Intelligence), Meta Computing, Overlay Networking, P2P web and networked digital societies. You can read about our stack here. [opencyberspace.org]

We believe that complex interactions amongst such technologies & the networks around them will drive collective emergence of higher order intelligence and over the long term, have profound and transformative shifts in what it means to be human and may even ultimately determine the apex form of intelligence.

The goal of open cyberspace is to lay decentralized foundations, collectively accelerate the "emergence" and most importantly steer the "emergence" towards good and safe outcomes.

Opencyberspace's ecosystem is fully open source with 50+ DePINs, systems, frameworks and protocols spanning across fields like AI, AGI, computing, Peers, digital societies.

Opencyberspace’s minecraft inspired design is at the core of all these projects, enabling seamless interoperability, modular integration and complex interactions. This unified architecture allows for a true plug-and-play approach - making it easy to collaborate with, extend, and integrate existing innovations and third-party contributions in a permission-less manner.

The DePINs & systems are architected to secure an open & safe cyberspace through

  • Scale - at species or multi-species scale,
  • Sovereignty (power to define, secure, and enforce rights & entitlements) & Interconnectivity
  • Complex interactions emerging among adaptive systems
  • Open-ended-ness [2] and
  • Plurality: inclusivity, comprehensiveness and diversity (choice) like that of structures, innovations, ideologies, and value systems.

It does not enforce a single worldview, organizing form, economic model, governance framework, or intelligence architecture. Instead, it enables interoperable parallel systems, remix-ability, plurality, coordination, cooperativeness and open-ended evolution. This (combined with DAI or AGI) could potentially upgrade all our societal systems such as economies, governance, institutions etc.

Such infrastructure enables many possible digital futures to arise, coexist, compete, and cooperate rather than enforcing mono-world view.

We are

We are a small team of Independent researchers and builders who began collaborating in 2018 around a long-term vision for Collective & Emergent General Intelligence. What started as a part-time exploration driven by curiosity and conviction has evolved into a dedicated, full-time mission in recent years.

To preserve creative autonomy, strategic clarity, and long-term integrity, the majority of our projects have been intentionally self-funded throughout the development phase. This approach has allowed us to build without external pressure, misaligned incentives, or short-term distractions.

Some of us in the core team have been building together for 6-12 years - some from the univ. days. Together we built & maintained one of India's largest distributed & sovereign AI infrastructure network handling 50 billion AI inferences per day - serving continuously for several years across geo distributed data centres. We believe that experience gives us deep insight into what it takes to build Opencyberspace.

We are excited by different possibilities of our works unlock. Yet what compels us most in the near term is the tangible impact our DePIN infrastructure can deliver - universal basic wealth and resources for humanity- ensuring that every individual possesses genuine agency and access to a baseline quality of life worthy of human dignity.

However, we do not view this as a matter of perpetual income transfers or centralized redistribution schemes. Instead, we through our work, we advocate for empowerment through universal access to networked intelligence and computing infrastructure. By placing sovereign, participatory access [3] to digital intelligence directly into the hands - and pockets - of individuals [4], we shift from dependency models toward capability models [5].

By this framework, economic security is not merely guaranteed through a central policy or at the mercy of a central institution; it is generated through open access to shared computational capital, digital societies, and emergent collective intelligence. Agency arises from inclusion in the infrastructure of value creation itself.

As we approach the completion of our planned development milestones, we will transition into a critical execution and network adoption phase that will be pivotal to the above stated mission and other long term missions.

During this stage, we will explore scalable and sustainable funding models aligned with our principles - ensuring the mission can expand its reach & outcomes while maintaining its independence and foundational values.

[3] “Sovereign, participatory access”

  • Sovereign means individuals are not merely users of a platform — they retain control, ownership, or meaningful rights over their tools and data.
  • Participatory means they are not passive consumers of intelligence; they can contribute, build, coordinate, and create value within the network.

So instead of renting intelligence from centralized providers, people become actors within the system.

[4] Suggests that advanced intelligence becomes a public capability, not an elite privilege.

[5] “Shift from dependency models toward capability models”

This is the core idea.

Dependency model:

  • People rely on institutions, corporations, or states to provide income, jobs, or services.
  • Power flows top-down.
  • Agency is conditional.

Capability model:

  • People are equipped with tools to generate value themselves.
  • Power flows bottom-up or peer-to-peer.
  • Agency is structural i.e. built-in, not granted.
